ARC2012, the most targeted networking platform for airline buyers and suppliers, has today announced that it is including a category focus on jewellery at this year’s Airline Retail Conference (ARC2012) event inLondonon 9th to 11th July, 2012.

Responding to feedback from delegates at last year’s sold-out conference in London, organisers have worked to involve a number of new, as well as famous jewellery brands, in the 70-stand suppliers’ exhibition.

 As always, the ARC exhibition offers airline buyers the chance to meet with a broad mix of food, beverage and retail suppliers, featuring some of the most established brands in travel retail, as well as a number of emerging brands and companies exploring the inflight retail channel for the first time.

Prepare to be dazzled at the event this July, as ARC showcases the best and brightest jewellery available inflight. Last week, British Airways celebrated 85 years since it (as Imperial Airways) served the first inflight meal on a commercial aircraft – on the Silverwing London to Paris route, since you ask.

Ten lucky passengers were served on the two-hour luxury flight. Here’s a description of what was available:

“On-board was a small cabinet carrying four gills (servings) of whisky, a dozen bottles of lager beer, two siphons of sparkling water and 12 assorted bottles of mineral water. They also carried a packet of sandwiches or biscuits and two thermos flasks of hot water, with which the steward made coffee or beef tea to nourish the passengers during the flight.”

Of course, inflight offerings these days range from a simple beverage in short-haul economy flights, to a full seven course banquet in long-haul first-class. These complicated variables may be the reason no one seems to have carried out a formal study of the overall size of the inflight F&B market. However, various estimates put airlines’ expenditure per head – of an economy inflight meal – anywhere between US$3.50 (north America) and US$7.30 (Air China).

If we take the lowest of these figures ($3.50) and multiply that by the 2.6bn long-haul passengers last year (source ACI/London Heathrow Airport), we comfortably reach $9.2bn. To then add a dollar as an average beverage cost for each of the 2.4bn short haul travellers, we reach a conservative estimate of US$11,617,200,000 per year.

Eleven billion dollars – and that’s at the thin end of the wedge: by the time we factor in the seven-course services and free-flowing cocktails, we’re talking about an awful lot more than that. I recently sat next to an Australian couple on a Singapore Airlines flight from Changi to Heathrow, where they managed to sink no fewer than 16 cans of Tiger between them.

And it’s not just the Gate Gourmets of the world who benefit from this industry. Hundreds of niche food suppliers make a very tidy living from the airline industry: when Northwest Airlines recently cut free pretzels from its offering, it claimed to save over $2m annually.
